What gravel delivery (all types) involves on a real property
Aggregate is one of those materials where the wrong product costs more than the right one. Drain rock under a patio will not compact and the pavers will move. Base rock in a French drain will clog with fines and stop draining within a season. Deciding what to order is genuinely more important than deciding who delivers it, so we start every gravel conversation with what the material has to do.
We deliver the full range: Class 2 aggregate base for driveways, slabs, and paver sub-base; three-quarter drain rock for French drains, dry wells, and behind retaining walls; pea gravel for pathways and dog runs; decorative and river rock for landscape beds; crushed rock and road base for rural driveways and equipment pads; and washed concrete sand and bedding sand for paver setting beds and pipe bedding. Loads run from a couple of yards for a garden project to multiple truckloads for a driveway.
Quantities are simple arithmetic that people routinely get wrong in both directions. A cubic yard covers about a hundred square feet at three inches deep, and roughly eighty at four inches. Compaction eats another ten to fifteen percent of loose volume, so a base course ordered to exactly the calculated figure comes up short. Tell us the area and the finished depth and we will do the conversion, including the compaction allowance.
Placement is where a delivery either saves labor or creates it. A dump truck can spread material along a driveway as it drives, which eliminates a great deal of wheelbarrow work. Backyard deliveries have to be stockpiled at the front and moved, so we talk about the route before scheduling. We also protect the drop area, because a full load of base rock landing on a decorative surface leaves marks.
Because we run excavation and grading crews as well, we can supply and place in one visit: cut the area to depth, deliver the aggregate, spread it, and compact it to a finished elevation. For a driveway or paver base that is usually cheaper than buying material and labor separately, and there is only one contractor accountable for the result.

How the work runs, step by step
Define the use
Driveway base, drain field, paver bedding, and decorative bed each want a different gradation. We start with the function, not the product name.
Calculate the volume
Square footage times finished depth, converted to cubic yards, plus the compaction allowance so the base reaches design thickness after rolling.
Check truck access
We confirm approach, turning room, overhead clearance, and whether the load can be spread in place or has to be stockpiled and moved.
Deliver and place
Material arrives on the scheduled day, protection goes down where needed, and the load is spread or stockpiled exactly where you asked.
Compact if requested
When we are placing as well as supplying, the aggregate is screeded to grade and compacted in lifts to a stable finished elevation.
Why hire a contractor
Where doing it yourself usually costs more
Buying aggregate by the bag is the most expensive way to buy rock that exists. A single cubic yard is around forty of the bags sold at a home center, at several times the delivered price per yard, and a driveway base can easily need twenty yards. The economics of bulk delivery are not close, and the savings arrive before anyone considers the labor of hauling bags in a car.
Product knowledge is the second reason to buy from a contractor rather than a catalog. Class 2 base has a graded mix of sizes and fines specifically so it locks together under compaction. Drain rock is washed and uniform specifically so water moves through it. Swapping them produces failures that look mysterious later: a paver field that ripples in year two, a drain that backs up in the first heavy December rain, a shed pad that will not stop sinking on one corner.
Delivery logistics finish the case. A loaded ten-wheeler is heavy enough to crack a residential driveway apron, needs real overhead clearance to raise the bed, and cannot back down a narrow lane blind. Matching truck size to your access, protecting what it drives over, and knowing when a smaller load in two trips is the cheaper answer is ordinary judgment for a company that hauls every day.

Class 2 aggregate base for the structural layer, compacted in lifts, then a thin bedding layer of washed concrete sand for setting the pavers. Drain rock is the wrong choice here because it will not lock up under compaction, and the field will move under foot traffic.
Three-quarter inch washed drain rock, wrapped in filter fabric. The washing matters: unwashed rock brings fines that migrate into the voids and reduce the flow path over time. Base rock in a drain will effectively seal it, which is one of the most common drainage mistakes we are called to fix.
Only if there is truck access. Where there is not, the load is stockpiled at the front and moved with a compact loader or by wheelbarrow. We will tell you honestly during scheduling which case applies, because the labor difference between the two is significant.
Both are available. If the truck can drive the run — a driveway or a long side yard — we spread as we unload, which saves hours of shoveling. Full grading and compaction to a finished elevation is a separate service we are glad to include.
A loaded truck is heavy, and thin or older residential concrete can crack under the wheel path or where the load lands. We assess the approach first, put protection under the drop, and where the risk is real we recommend a street drop or a smaller truck making two trips.
Yes. Pea gravel, river rock, crushed decorative stone, and cobble are all available for landscape beds, dry creek features, and pathways. For decorative material we recommend fabric underneath, since without it soil migrates upward and the color dulls within a couple of seasons.
